Our history

Pine Run United Methodist Church has the distinction of being the oldest of the religious groups now serving the city of Clairton and surrounding communities.  In 1854, a small group descended mainly from English and Scotch-Irish immigrants and located in a settlement known as Pine Run.  Pine Run recognized their need for the spiritual strength and inspiration which are experienced in group worship of God.  To satisfy that need they banded together, offering mutual help and seeking divine guidance through a class, which met in the homes of members or in an old school house.  The class became affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church already serving the McKeesport area.  The zeal and fervor of this small band aroused the interest of others; its members served as a nucleus around which the new church was to grow.

Members of the Pine Run group felt that  a Society independent of the McKeesport church would be desirable and petitioned the Pittsburgh Conference to that effect.  The Conference agree and Pine Run Methodist Episcopal Church officially came into being in the year 1854.  Its original membership consisted of twelve people.  Expanding steadily, the small congregation continued active and loyal and by 1856 had a new building ready for dedication.  The original building was located along North State Street in Clairton.  As a house of worship, it served its purpose admirable for nearly a century.

Church membership increased steadily as the area became industrialized.  The twelve grew to 400 in 1947.  A physical change was needed to adequately house the worshippers of Pine Run.  On July 14, 1952, a ground breaking ceremony was held on the present building site and the first unit of the present structure was built.  On Palm Sunday, March 29, 1953, the pastor delivered the first sermon in the new structure, "Triumph through Perseverance."  A record-breaking Sunday School attendance of 275 was followed by a service of worship with 330 in attendance.  Plans were started to erect the Sanctuary in 1955 and it was completed and consecrated in 1957.  The interior of the Sanctuary was completed in 1962, and all of the Church was dedicated on March 10, 1968.

Many, many years have gone by since twelve people felt the need to organize and worship together.  Today, we continue to ask for God's guidance for the future of Pine Run United Methodist Church and its people in this community.
